SPRAY
FOAM AND GREEN BUILDING
 |
What
is green building?
Some products are considered green because
of their material type and/or the amount
of energy usage necessary to produce them
(embodied energy).
Products are also considered green because
of the energy savings benefits derived throughout
their usable life span.
Energy efficiency is a key component in
meeting ENERGY STAR, National Association
of Home Builders (NAHB) and Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
NAHB Green Building Guidelines state, in
part, “Energy consumption has far-reaching
environmental impacts: from the mining of
fossil-fuel energy sources to the environmental
emissions from burning non-renewable energy
sources. And each home consumes energy year
after year, meaning that the environmental
impacts associated with that use accrue over
time. Therefore, energy efficiency is weighted
heavily in a green building program.” |
Spray foam insulation qualifies as a green building
material because it takes less energy to produce
than other forms of insulation, it reduces energy
use and therefore pollution, it has renewable
bio-based content, and because it has a very long
energy savings life cycle.
In order to get the full benefit of SPF it is
